Taking Action
Lending
a Hand to Egg-Laying Hens
Choose Egg-Free Foods:
The best way each of us can help egg-laying hens is to leave their eggs out
of our shopping carts.
Crack the Cruelty by Signing our 30-day Egg-Free Pledge:
Stand up for egg-laying hens every time you sit down to eat by pledging to leave eggs off your plate for 30 days.
Urge the FDA to Require Full Disclosure on Cartons:
Animal welfare claims on egg cartons are currently unregulated in the U.S., and as a result, misleading packaging is rampant. Please write a letter in support of a petition filed with the FDA seeking to mandate egg production labels on egg cartons sold nationwide (i.e. "Eggs from Caged Hens") to help protect consumers and hens.
Help Expose the Hard-Boiled Truth: Educate others and
encourage them to take action by distributing our new Egg Carton flyer in your community!
Write a Letter: Please
urge your legislators to ban the use of barren battery cages. Welfare concerns
have already prompted the European Union to phase out the use of conventional
battery cages by 2012. The U.S. should do the same. Contact
your representatives and let them know that it's time to ease the suffering
of laying hens. Read COK's report, Animal
Suffering in the Egg Industry, to learn more about the inherent cruelties
of the battery cage system.
Tell Your Friends and
Family: Let others know about the miseries endured by egg-laying hens and how
they can helpsend them a link to this site.
Look for the Logo: The
egg industry's misleading "Animal Care Certified" logo can no longer
be stamped on egg cartons nationwide as of April 1, 2006. Learn
more about this deceptive advertising campaign and how to contact us if you
still see the logo in stores.
Live in California or know someone who does? A precedent-setting
ballot initiative campaign is underway in California to ban the cruelest
confinement systems on factory farms, including battery cages. Voters
will decide this November, and you can get involved in helping make a
difference for farmed animals by visiting CaliforniaHumane.com.
